What 詣 means
It means reaching a person, place, or level of mastery. The earliest evidence I can defend here is not an oracle-bone date: the character-history record shows forms in Chu manuscripts and Qin slips before the small-seal form recorded in Shuowen. As of 2026, those sources support a gradual written evolution, not a single inventor or a secure oracle-bone first date.
That movement sense explains its older social uses: Chinese examples use it for going before a governor or approaching a superior, while 造詣 turns reaching into attained depth in learning or skill. Standard Japanese character reference classifies 詣 as a phonetic compound of 言 and 旨, so its shape is not a picture of a shrine. Japanese also preserves the destination sense in 詣でる, a visit to a shrine or temple; いたる keeps the broader “reach” sense.
Why does the meaning change in 造詣 and 参詣?
The compound chooses between attainment and religious arrival. In 造詣, 詣 is metaphorical: your learning has arrived at a high level. In 参詣 and 初詣, the destination is a shrine or temple, and 初詣 names the first such visit of the New Year in Japan. These are connected compounds built from the same arrival idea, not unrelated symbols.
The same split appears across languages. Chinese dictionaries foreground yì as “go to” and “attain”; Japanese dictionaries give ケイ, もうでる, and いたる. Read the neighboring word and language before assigning one English gloss.
Why do I see 詣 and 诣?
They are traditional/Japanese and simplified Chinese forms. 詣 and 诣 are related script forms, not two moods or two emoji meanings. Simplified Chinese writes 诣; Japanese and Traditional Chinese retain 詣. A conversion or input method set for the wrong script can therefore return a different-looking character.
If someone sends only 詣, do not force a single translation. Ask whether the surrounding text is Chinese or Japanese and whether the character belongs to 造詣, 参詣, 初詣, or another word; the compound is doing the work.
Formal, literary, and compound-bound; its tone comes from the language and word around it.
A bare 詣 is not automatically a pilgrimage or a compliment.

Questions people ask
1Why does 詣 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
