What 誅 means
誅 means to punish, execute, or condemn severely.
A character-history reconstruction places an early 誅 form in bronze inscriptions—writing cast or carved on bronze vessels—in the late Warring States period, around 250 BC. The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary compiled around 100 AD, records a seal-script form, a formal early writing style, and analyzes 誅 as 言, meaning speech, plus 朱, which supplies the sound.
Later dictionary senses include rebuking, suppressing, killing, demanding payment, or removing someone. In 口誅筆伐, punishment turns metaphorical: the phrase means condemning wrongdoing through speech and writing.
Severe, literary, and punitive; it suits historical writing, formal rhetoric, or deliberate drama.
Alone, it can sound like a call for someone’s punishment or death.
