What 誊 means
It means to reproduce written text by writing it again.
The older form 謄 appears in the Eastern Han dictionary Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary, with a gloss meaning “to transfer written text by copying it.” A Yuan period record describes exam scripts copied line by line in red ink.
Chinese uses it in 誊写 for copying out text and in 誊录 for transcription. 抄写 is a synonym, not a variant.

1Why does 誊 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
