What 認 means
Recognition does not automatically mean approval. Chinese and Korean compounds use 認 for recognizing or admitting; Japanese 認める can mean recognize, accept, or permit.
What do the old dictionaries tell us?
They trace dictionary entries, not the character’s origin. As of 2024, Taiwan’s Ministry of Education character-variant dictionary records 認 as absent from Shuowen, an early Chinese dictionary. Yupian, compiled in 543 CE, includes 認; the later Guangyun dictionary glosses it around recognizing things.
