What 談 means
It means talk, discussion, or conversation. If it appears inside a longer word, read the whole word before deciding what the sender means.
In Japanese compounds, 談 is read ダン; as a native Japanese verb it can also be read かたる, “to speak.” Korean uses 담 in 담화 (談話). The shared character does not give the languages identical words or pronunciations.
Why does 談 change meaning in compounds?
The whole word and its language set the meaning.
In Chinese, 談話 means conversation or talk, while 談判 means negotiation. Japanese 談話 refers to conversation or informal remarks. Korean 담화 (談話) also means an official announcement or discourse.
Where does 談 come from?
Its earliest known written form appears in late Warring States writing.
That period preceded China’s imperial unification; versions from different regions had local features but remained broadly similar. Traditional character analysis treats 言 as the speech-related meaning component and 炎 as the sound-bearing component. Ancient Chinese texts use 談 for conversation and discussion; later examples also use it for expressed views, praise, and calm or plain speech.
Neutral at its core; its compounds range from conversation to negotiation or an official statement.
A lone 談 does not automatically mean “let’s talk.”
