What 諫 means
It names an admonition meant to correct someone's course.
Its earliest attested uses appear on bronze objects inscribed in the middle Western Zhou. The sense is remonstrating with a ruler: speaking up to steer a leader away from a mistake. In Japanese, 諫める means to admonish someone or restrain them.
諫 combines 言, the speech component, with 柬, which supplies a sound clue. 諫言 names a remonstrance; 諫諍 makes the disagreement more explicit.
Formal and pointed: it frames advice as a correction of someone's conduct or decision.
It can sound like a rebuke, not friendly general advice.
