What 諺 means
A proverb: a familiar saying passed along, often with advice.
An early example appears in the Zuo Zhuan, a Chinese historical chronicle, in material associated with the Spring and Autumn period: 周諺有之, “the Zhou saying goes.” The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary, glosses 諺 as a transmitted saying and analyzes its form as 言 (“speech”) plus 彥 as the sound component.
In the Chinese proverb tradition, a speaker can use a familiar saying to warn, support a judgment, or make a point. Sayings also moved into written collections and prose while remaining part of oral tradition.
What does 諺 mean in Japanese?
In Japanese, 諺 is read ことわざ: a proverb or saying.
Japanese usage includes sayings inherited from Chinese or Buddhist texts as well as those drawn from local experience. Chinese compounds such as 諺語 name proverbs. Korean uses the native word 속담 for a proverb; compounds written with Chinese characters, such as 俚諺 and 俗諺, also refer to folk sayings.
The Korean compound 諺文 had a different job. In Joseon-era Korea, it was a name for the vernacular script, the Korean alphabet known as Hangul. Here 諺 belongs to a historical label, not the usual word for a proverb.
How should I read 諺 in a message?
Without language context, a lone 諺 is ambiguous.
Ask which language or surrounding word it belongs to: Chinese and Japanese point toward a proverb, while 諺文 is a Korean historical term. The character alone cannot settle the reading.
Unicode's CJK guidance explains why Chinese-, Japanese-, and Korean-oriented fonts may draw 諺 differently: regional forms can share one encoded character. A shape difference is not a different character.
In Chinese and Japanese, 諺 names a proverb and feels more like a reference term than a casual reaction.
Alone, 諺 does not tell you which language or sense the writer intends.

It was a historical name for the Korean vernacular script, the alphabet known as Hangul. The compound is a Korean historical term, not a Chinese or Japanese proverb word.
Why does 諺 look different in fonts?
Chinese-, Japanese-, and Korean-oriented fonts can use different regional shapes for the same encoded character. The font changes its appearance, not its identity.
