What 謽 means
It describes words that refuse to give way.
An old dictionary gloss, 詞不屈也, means “words that do not submit.” 謽 describes stubborn or argumentative speech, rather than strength in general.
Someone sent me 謽—what does it imply?
Read it as a pointed label, not praise.
A 2017 national dialect table records 謽嘴 in Xuzhou, Shenmu, and Shenzhou usage across Mandarin, Jin, and Hakka, glossed as “talk back” or “argue.” Alone, 謽 is too rare to decode confidently; ask what the sender means before assuming they are criticizing you.
Where does 謽 come from?
Its recorded dictionary trail reaches back to the Song dynasty.
The Taiwan Ministry of Education’s 2024 Dictionary of Chinese Character Variants marks 謽 as absent from 說文解字, an early Chinese character dictionary. Song dynasty dictionaries 集韻 and 類篇 gloss it as 詞不屈也, “words that do not submit”; later entries in the Kangxi Dictionary (康熙字典) repeat the gloss.
It has a literary, dialectal feel; aimed at a person, it sounds pointed about their speech.
It can criticize how someone answers; it is not a general compliment for strength.

Fonts draw this as text, so stroke shapes can vary. A missing-character box means that font lacks the glyph; neither variation by itself means the character’s meaning changed.
