Chinese character 讲

15795/20992

讲 (jiǎng) means “talk,” “explain,” or “discuss” in Mandarin. Pinyin, Mandarin’s Latin-letter spelling system, writes it with a tone mark; without the mark, it is jiang. Compounds can shift it toward teaching, reasoning, or bargaining.

Text symbol

What 讲 means

It means talking, explaining, or discussing. 讲 is the simplified form of traditional 講; both write the same Mandarin word. The form was included in mainland China’s 1956 character-simplification scheme. In 讲道理 it can mean reason with someone; in 讲价, bargain over a price.

Texts from ancient China’s Warring States period use 講 for ending hostilities. The Eastern Han dictionary Shuowen Jiezi glosses it as “make peace.”

Neutral alone; the surrounding words set its tone.

讲道理 may tell someone to be reasonable, not just to talk.
