讵 (jù) is an old-style Chinese function word: it questions a premise (“how could…?”) or marks an unforeseen result. You meet it in literary and formal prose, not as a self-explanatory chat reaction. One small character covers both a rhetorical question and an unexpected turn.

Text symbol

What 讵 means

讵 asks a bookish “how could…?” or “who knew?” Read it through the words after it: 讵知 asks how one could know, 讵可 asks how something could be acceptable, and 讵料 marks an unexpected result.

The clearest early witness is the received 莊子/大宗師, which uses traditional 詎 in 庸詎知吾所謂天之非人乎? to challenge an assumption rather than name an object. As of 2026-09-08, no source in this research trail identifies a one-off inventor: the word belongs to classical text tradition, while Taiwan Ministry of Education says 詎 is recorded in the 新附 material added to 說文, not the main entry.

That record glosses it with 岂 and 何 and also gives senses such as “ever,” “if,” or “unexpectedly,” especially in 讵料. It analyzes 詎 as 言 plus 巨; 詎 is the traditional form of 讵, while 岂 and 何 are semantic neighbors, not alternate glyphs.

Use 讵 for a literary voice, not casual chat.

If someone sends 讵 alone, read it as an incomplete literary phrase, not a modern reaction. Ask for the surrounding words: the same character can point toward “how could…?” or “unexpectedly,” depending on what follows.

Use it when quoting classical Chinese, writing in an intentionally old-fashioned register, or making a formal rhetorical turn. In everyday messaging, a plainer equivalent such as 岂, 怎么, or 没想到 will make the intended reading easier to catch.

Literary and formal; it signals classical diction more than everyday conversation.

A bare 讵 can sound like a reaction, but it is usually a fragment of a phrase.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 讵 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
