What 论 means
It means “discuss” or “reasoned argument”; it can also mean “theory.”
In 讨论 it means discussing a topic; 理论 means a theory or system of ideas. Japanese uses 論 in 論文 and 理論; readings depend on the language.
Traditional 論 combines 言 (speech) and 侖 (sound). 《说文解字》 glosses it as “discuss”; written records include a late Warring States bronze form and later Qin writing slips, tracing the ancestor rather than dating simplified 论.
