What 诂 means
It explains old language in words readers can follow.
Earlier, it could mean an old saying or old word-sense; as a verb, it glossed ancient or dialectal language. In modern Chinese, it survives mainly in learned compounds like 训诂.
Why does 诂 appear in classical scholarship?
It was built to bridge older wording and later readers.
Its earliest written anchor is the pre-Qin Erya, a glossary of difficult words; Han-Tang commentaries expanded the practice as scripts, pronunciations, and textual versions diverged.
Scholarly and classical; 诂 alone points to textual explanation, not everyday conversation.
Do not use 诂 as a casual substitute for ordinary explain.

1Why does 诂 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
