What 诃 means
It usually means “to scold” or “rebuke.”
诃斥 keeps the rebuke sense. 摩诃 is a Chinese sound transcription of Sanskrit mahā (“great,” roughly “ma-haa” with a long final vowel); 诃子 names the myrobalan tree and its fruit.
Inscriptions on bronze objects from the late Spring and Autumn period of ancient China use a related graph for 歌 (“sing”) in a ritual phrase about singing and dancing. Later Chinese dictionaries describe the rebuke as loud, angry speech.

3Questions people ask
1Why does 诃 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
