Chinese character 评

15813/20992

评 means “to comment on, assess, or review”; in Mandarin it is pronounced píng. It appears in words for commentary and reviews. Alone, it does not say whether a judgment is praise or criticism.

Text symbol

What 评 means

评 means to comment on or judge. In Mandarin it is pronounced píng. 评论 means commentary; 影评 and 书评 mean film and book reviews.

Older Chinese texts use 評 as a heading for judgment, alongside 太史公曰, 赞, and 论. A Southern Song example in 《世说新语》, a collection of anecdotes and conversations, preserves the verb sense. Unicode’s 1993 date marks encoding, not origin.

Evaluative, but not inherently insulting.

评 alone does not say whether the judgment is praise or criticism.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 评 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
