What 识 means

In Chinese, 识 contributes “know” or “recognize” in 认识, and “knowledge” in 知识; alone, it has no single English equivalent.
Traditional 識 combines 言 (a speech-related meaning component) with 戠 (a sound component). It appears in classical Chinese works, including the Book of Songs, an early poetry collection, Rites of Zhou and Zuo Tradition. Older glosses link it with 志 (“remember or mark”) and 幟 (“flag or sign”), without proving direct descent.
