What 诏 means
It is an emperor's formal edict. The older verbal sense was broader: to announce, inform, admonish, or teach.
The character is attested in late Warring States Qin texts and excavated objects with that broader sense. After Qin unification, the court repurposed it: 诏 named the ruler's orders to officials and subjects, while 制 named the sovereign's command. Qin did not invent the graph; it gave an existing word a restricted official role.
Why does 诏 appear in several decree terms?
Court usage made 诏 one category among several. In the Han, 诏书 was one of four named forms of imperial communication. From Wei-Jin through Sui, 制、诏、册、敕 became fixed document types. In Tang and Song, 诏书 announced accessions, amnesties, major state acts, or a ruler's final instructions.
Ming and Qing practice kept 诏 for major political, military, and ceremonial announcements to the realm. Surviving Qing examples were written, sealed, and proclaimed; an 遗诏 could become a disputed political document, not just a private last message.
Archaic, courtly, and authoritative; in a modern message it sounds historical or theatrically royal.
Do not use it for an ordinary request unless the imperial tone is intentional.
