What 诨 means
It means joking, teasing, or buffoonery.
The compound supplies the setting: 诨话 is joking speech, 诨名 or 诨号 is a humorous nickname that may tease, and 诨语 is comic speech. Alone, 诨 leaves the joke’s target or setting unclear; the surrounding phrase tells you how sharp it sounds.
Where does 诨 come from?
A Tang-era record attests it in comic performance.
A Tang-era account of rebel leader Shi Siming describes an entertainer performing near him and calls the comic act 优诨. It attests an early use, but does not establish where the word began.
In Chinese theatre, 科诨 joined comic speech and action: performers could shape comic characters, break up serious stretches, and keep a show moving. Ming–Qing theatre theory treated it as a craft with standards, not merely crude clowning. Later usage includes written banter and humorous nicknames. Mandarin Pinyin hùn starts with a soft sound from the back of the mouth and falls in pitch; the Cantonese Jyutping reading of 諢 is wan6, beginning with a w-like glide and staying low and level.
Marked and literary: it signals joking speech, buffoonery, or teasing rather than neutral everyday humor.
Read 诨名 as potentially teasing; it is not automatic praise.

1Why does 诨 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
