What 诧 means
A modern sentence points to surprise; an old one may not. In ordinary Mandarin, 诧 describes finding something strange or unexpected. In classical Chinese, the same written form can work as a verb for boasting or deceiving, so translating every instance as “surprised” can reverse the sentence.
The earliest concrete attestation located here is 詫 in the Wuwei slips’ 士相見 text, a Han-period manuscript witness; the exact copying date is debated. Its traditional form is analyzed as phonetic-semantic: 言 points to the speech domain and 宅 supplies the sound. The classical dictionary tradition gives “boast” as its original sense, while later entries record surprise and deception.
In modern Chinese, the surprise sense is the safe default; the boast and deceive senses belong to older or literary wording.
In an old passage, do not translate every 诧 as “surprised.”
