Kanji 詫

15468/20992

詫 is the kanji used in Japanese apology words such as 詫びる and お詫び. In Chinese, the same character can belong to words about surprise, boasting, or deception. For wabi-sabi, use 侘 instead.

Text symbol

What 詫 means

It marks an apology, especially in 詫びる and お詫び.

詫 did not begin as a Japanese apology mark. Chinese evidence gives it speech-related senses such as boasting, deceiving, telling, and being astonished; Japanese dictionaries describe the character as 言 plus the phonetic element 宅. The trail is an evolution, not a one-person invention: the native wabi is attested as 和備 in 続日本紀 in 771, while the apology sense written with 詫 appears in 今鏡 in 1170.

詫 and 侘 are not interchangeable

Use 詫 for an apology; use 侘 for wabi-sabi.

Both can be read wabi in Japanese, but the semantic lanes split. 侘 covers secluded living, quiet austerity, and the tea ideal of 侘茶; 詫 carries the apology lane. If you mean wabi-sabi, choose the 侘 character with 寂.

Why do gamers say 詫び石?

It means apology compensation, not an apology sentence.

詫び石 is game-community slang for free in-game currency or items given after a bug, outage, or extended maintenance. An industry account traces its popularization to a 2012 Puzzle & Dragons compensation event, but that is a reported origin story, not proof of the first use. A 2022 game-community glossary records the term as an apology token, not an operator's automatic duty.

In gamer chat, 詫び石 can be playful shorthand; demanding it as if compensation were automatically owed can sound aggressive. Read the surrounding tone before treating it as a literal request.

In Japanese, 詫 belongs to apology vocabulary; alone, it gives too little context in a mixed-language chat.

Do not treat a bare 詫 as a universal “sorry.”

1

Why does 詫 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
