Chinese character Yun

Read it yūn, on a high, even first tone. Dictionaries gloss it as “beautiful” or “good.” In a personal name, it supplies a favorable sense, but the character alone cannot tell you how its bearer prefers the name to be pronounced.

The traditional form 贇 appears in older Chinese dictionaries: Yupian and Longkan Shoujing include it, and Guangyun glosses it as 美好 (“beautiful, good”). A 2024 entry in Taiwan’s Ministry of Education Variant Character Dictionary says 贇 is absent from Shuowen, an early Chinese dictionary. 赟 also appears in personal names in the Old History of the Five Dynasties and Ming-period records.

How do I type 赟?

Try yun in a Chinese pinyin input method first. If 赟 appears in the candidate list, select it; its spoken reading is yūn, with a high, level tone.

As of 2026, Sogou’s official help describes U-mode: press u, then enter pinyin for a character’s components or stroke initials. For 赟, use 斌 (bin) and 贝 (bei). A 2023 report lists 赟 among rare name characters and describes input and display failures, including replacement with pinyin or placeholder marks. If the glyph is missing, the input system or font may not support it; the character’s identity has not changed.
