Chinese character 趪

16299/20992

趪 describes effortful motion under a load, especially in 趪趪. A classical line uses it for a bell stand straining beneath a great bell; dictionaries also gloss it as martial or dance-like, and as a way of walking. 僙 is listed as a variant. Entering huang in a Mandarin Pinyin IME brings a crowded candidate list.

Text symbol

What 趪 means

It describes effort under weight, chiefly in 趪趪.

In Zhang Heng’s Eastern Han poem 西京賦 (“Western Capital Rhapsody”), 洪鐘萬鈞,猛虡趪趪 pictures a great bell hanging from an ornate stand: 趪趪 describes the stand bearing the load. Here 虡 means a stand for a bell or drum.

How did 趪 enter the dictionaries?

Later Chinese dictionaries preserve its recorded senses.

The 2024 edition of Taiwan’s Ministry of Education dictionary notes that the early character dictionary 說文解字 (“Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters”) does not list 趪. Later works, including 玉篇 (“Jade Chapters”) and 廣韻 (“Expanded Rhymes”), preserve its literary use and gloss it as effort under weight or martial bearing; another gloss describes a dance-like manner.

集韻 (“Collected Rhymes”) records a separate reading for 趪 with a gloss describing a way of walking. Context distinguishes that sense from the repeated literary word.

How do I type 趪?

Use a Unicode hex route or search by components.

In a Mandarin Pinyin IME, type huang without a tone mark; its candidate list is crowded. As of 2026, code-entry routes vary by application.

Classical and lexicographic; in a message it reads as a quotation or deliberate archaism.

Do not flatten it to “strong”: its glosses distinguish effort, martial bearing, dance, and walking.
