What 跱 means
It means to stand or remain in place.
Classical Chinese uses it for a crane standing still, a landscape rising high, rival powers facing one another, or provisions held in reserve. The phrase tells you which sense fits.
How did 跱 develop?
Its history includes regional speech and related written forms.
The early Chinese book 《方言》, a collection of regional words, records 跱 in the eastern Qi–Haida area with the sense “treading.” The political inscription 《受禅表》 uses this exact form in 220, written in clerical script, an older Chinese calligraphic style.
Later Chinese dictionaries connect 跱 with 峙 and record 𨃉 as a variant. These links document a changing written tradition; they do not prove that one form can replace another in every text.
Use 跱 when a classical register is intentional
In ordinary prose, it reads as a deliberate classical or philological choice. Keep a phrase around it when the intended sense needs to be clear.
If it appears as a box, the active font lacks the character; switch to a font with CJK coverage.
