Text symbol

What 軽 means

Light; the word around it sets the shade.

軽い describes low weight, mild symptoms, or easy work. About a person, it can suggest carelessness; 口が軽い (“light mouth”) means loose-lipped.

The older form 輕 combines 車, the vehicle component, with 巠, which supplies the sound. Its light-chariot sense broadened to quick, easy, mild, and dismissive. 軽 appears as a variant in Dunhuang and Song–Yuan sources; Japan standardized it in 1949, not invented it.

Neutral for physical weight; pointed about someone's character or discretion.

軽い about a person can imply carelessness.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 軽 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
