Chariot Rail

軾 names the front rail of an ancient Chinese chariot. Leaning on it became a respectful salute; Japanese usage also extends the term to ritual armrests and kneeling mats.

What 軾 means

It names the rail and the formal gesture made against it.

This ancient Chinese chariot rail let a driver travel standing, gripping it while holding reins or weapons. Late Anyang chariots (from an ancient Chinese site) and Western Zhou dynasty finds provide archaeological evidence for it.

In Classical Chinese, the older literary form of Chinese, 軾 became a verb for the rider's respectful lean.

Why does 軾 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
