What 边 means
It means “side” or “edge”; nearby words set the sense. 河边 means “by the river”; 边缘 is an edge or margin; 边境 is a border region. In 左边, it marks the left side, while 旁边 and 这边 mean “nearby” and “this side” or “here.”
Read 边 as part of its surrounding phrase. By itself, it usually leaves you without enough context to tell whether it marks an edge, a location, or part of a two-action construction.
How did 边 get this form?
边 is the simplified form of the older character 邊.
Older forms of 邊 appear in seal writing, an ancient formal script, inscriptions on bronze, and manuscripts. They combine 辶, the movement component, with 臱, another part of the character, to write ideas such as side, edge, and frontier. Records of variant forms cite 边 in popular writing of the Song–Yuan period. The 1956 Chinese simplification scheme selected 边 for 邊, standardizing a form already in use.
Why does 边 repeat?
边…边… links two actions happening at the same time.
The fuller pattern is 一边…一边…; in casual speech and messages, the initial 一 is often left out. 边走边聊 means “walking while chatting.” In this construction, each 边 introduces an action rather than meaning “side.”
Neutral and everyday in Chinese; the surrounding word or grammatical pattern supplies the tone.
A bare 边 needs its surrounding phrase to make the reading clear.

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
