What 辺 means
辺 marks an edge, border, or nearby area. You meet この辺, around here, walk along 海辺, the seaside, and measure 底辺, the base side of a shape.
The character's early bronze-inscription form from Western Zhou times already carried the frontier-edge idea. Later Chinese and Japanese use widened it to vicinity, direction, limit, shore, and geometry.
Use 辺 for Japanese and 边 for Simplified Chinese; 邊 is the traditional form. The same code point can look slightly different in Japanese and Chinese fonts, so a changed stroke shape is a font choice, not broken text.
Neutral Japanese kanji for compounds, place words, and geometry.
In Simplified Chinese, use 边 unless preserving a name or quotation.
