What 遗 means
The compound tells you which member of the semantic family is active.
Classical dictionaries start with something going missing, then extend it to forgetting, abandoning, leaving behind, a remainder, or giving to someone. 遗 is a form-sound character built from the movement radical 辵/辶 and 貴 as its sound hint; the dictionary base sense is “lost.” The earliest stage shown in the character-history record is bronze-inscription writing, followed by Chu manuscripts, seal script, Qin strips, clerical script, and regular script. No one-off inventor is supported in the character-history record.
遗 vs 遺: is it a different character?
Same character family; the script standard changes the shape.
As of 2026, simplified Chinese is mainly used in Mainland China, Malaysia, and Singapore, while traditional Chinese is mainly used in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. Japanese reference writing uses 遺. That is a script convention, not a meaning contrast: 遗 is the simplified form of 遺.
遗 when sent alone?
Treat it as incomplete until the surrounding word appears.
A lone 遗 does not select one English translation; read the next character, the full word, or the sentence. 遗失 points to something missing, 遗漏 to something skipped, and 遗产 to property or status passed down. If the sender uses 遺, first read it as a script choice; do not invent a different emotional meaning.
A written-language character whose tone comes from the compound, not from 遗 alone.
Do not assign “legacy” or “loss” to a lone 遗 without its compound.

1Why does 遗 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
