What 遘 means
It means “encounter,” and sometimes “cause” or “bring about.”
Its ancestor appears in Shang-period oracle-bone and bronze forms. 冓 supplied the idea of two things meeting; adding 辵 marked movement into an encounter, followed by seal, clerical, and regular forms. Classical texts use 遘 for meeting or undergoing an event; dictionaries also record 遘 as 構, “make/cause.” It is close to 遇 and 逢, and linked to 姤 and 覯 through variant or borrowed uses.
Literary and old-fashioned; use 遇 for ordinary “encounter” wording.
Its “cause” sense can reverse the reading of 遘患.
