鄎 names an ancient state whose name later histories usually write as 息. The state was in the Huai River region of what is now Henan, China; dictionaries also record 鄎 for another old place on the border of Qi. A Spring-and-Autumn bronze food vessel bears the inscription 鄎子行.

What 鄎 means

鄎 names an ancient state and, in some records, a place.

The state belonged to the Ji clan, the ruling family of Zhou-era China, and lay in the Huai River region of what is now Henan. Dictionaries also record 鄎 for a separate place on the southern edge of the state of Qi during the Spring-and-Autumn period, an era of early Chinese history.

Why do histories write 息 for 鄎?

Transmitted histories usually write the state as 息; inscriptions preserve 鄎.

The 鄎子行 inscription is on a bronze food basin from the mid-Spring-and-Autumn period. It names its maker as 鄎子行. A 2023 study suggests the maker belonged to the former ruling family after the state was conquered by the neighboring state of Chu around 680 BCE; it allows that he may himself have been the former ruler.

How can I type 鄎?

Try both Mandarin readings in a pinyin input method.

Dictionaries give xì and xī, so switch readings if the character is missing from the candidates. Hexadecimal entry is a desktop fallback.

Historical and specialized: it marks an old place or state in character dictionaries, inscriptions, and history writing.

For the ancient state, 息 is usual in received histories; use 鄎 when an inscription or dictionary preserves it.

Can 鄎 look different in different fonts?

Yes. Han fonts can draw the same encoded character with locale-specific details; a different glyph shape alone does not change its Unicode identity.
