What 鄢 means
It names an ancient state and a surname; Mandarin reads it yān.
A Spring and Autumn period account, from early Chinese history, uses 鄢 in 鄭伯克段于鄢 for the ancient state's name. Mandarin yān sounds roughly like “yen,” held at a high, level pitch.
After Zheng conquered the state, the place was renamed 鄢陵. 鄢 is also a Chinese surname.
