What 鄮 means
鄮 chiefly appears in 鄮县, the old county name in the Ningbo region. Qin established it in Kuaiji, an ancient administrative region, in 222 BCE. Local histories also link it with 甬东 (Yongdong) and the later coastal administration 明州 (Ming Prefecture).
In 909, 鄮县 was renamed 鄞县 to avoid a name taboo: 鄮 sounded like 茂 in Zhu Maolin’s (朱茂琳) name. The early Chinese character dictionary Shuowen Jiezi treats 貿 as the part that hints at 鄮’s sound; a Zhoushan local explanation combines 貿 (“trade”) and 邑 (“settlement”) as “trade town.”

1Why does 鄮 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
