What 釂 means
It means drinking wine until the cup is empty.
The Eastern Han period dictionary Shuowen Jiezi defines 釂 as drinking wine to the end. In the Liji, an old ritual book, a younger drinker waits until an elder’s raised cup is empty.
Examples from the Han through Tang and later periods keep that sense in ritual and literature. The Han Shu, a history of the Han, tells of a man forced to finish a cup. As of 2026, CJK fonts may vary by region or omit 釂.
Classical and banquet-specific.
For a friendly toast, it can sound like an order to finish the cup.

Questions people ask
1Why does 釂 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
