鋴

cjk unified ideograph-92f4

CJK Unified Ideograph-92F4

鋴 is an obscure hanzi best read as an old variant in the 鎭/鎮 family — pressing down, calming, guarding, towns — not a chat character. Its clearest trail is an old dictionary note; Taiwan also keeps it in the dialect word 靐鋴, “not refined”. Readings split: Han Dian gives zhèn, Taiwan’s 2024 CNS record gives kè.

What 鋴 means

Treat 鋴 as a rare variant in the 鎭/鎮 family.

The trail runs through two dictionaries: a note in 字彙補, a supplement on rare forms, calls 𨥵 an old form of 鎭 and says the 集韻 writes it as 鋴. That Song rhyme dictionary, conventionally dated 1039, is the earliest dated record of this glyph.

The family covers a weight for holding things down, calming or suppressing, guarding, and later towns — senses belonging to 鎮 itself, not a separate modern meaning for 鋴.

Why do dictionaries disagree about its reading?

The surviving records list different readings for the same glyph.

Han Dian lists Mandarin zhèn and Cantonese hak1; Taiwan’s 2024 CNS11643 record gives kè — matching 克, the right-hand phonetic. A real documentation split, not several everyday meanings.

In a real text, the surrounding word and source outrank any single dictionary line. For modern writing, use 鎮 or 镇.

Is 鋴 used in dialect writing?

Yes — in one recorded dialect word.

Taiwan’s 2024 Ministry of Education dialect table lists 鋴 inside 靐鋴, glossed “not refined”, citing the 上元縣志 county gazetteer. It marks the character 字書無 — absent from standard dictionaries — so the gloss stays with that phrase and source.

Specialist territory: in chat it reads as a quotation, lookup, dialect note, or typo.

Don’t swap it for 镇 in normal writing — readers may know the family, not this glyph.

Questions people ask

3

Can 鋴 replace 鎮 or 镇?

No. It survives as a historical or regional variant of the 鎮 family; use 鎮 or 镇 in modern writing.

Why does 鋴 show as a square?

A font gap. Taiwan’s 2024 CNS record ships dedicated fonts for it; a font without the glyph draws a box.

What does 靐鋴 mean?

“Not refined” or “uncouth” — a dialect expression cited from a county gazetteer; the gloss belongs to that expression.
