What 鑞 means
Solder: a tin–lead alloy for joining metal.
Chinese dictionaries call it 白鑞 or 焊錫. In Japanese, the dictionary keeps the tin and alloy sense; 鑞接 means soldering. The evidence points to continuity, not a symbolic reinterpretation.
The material came first: Pb–Sn solder appears in Warring States (5th–3rd centuries BCE) and Eastern Han (1st–3rd centuries CE) objects. The Han-era Shuowen commentary says 鑞 was absent, so its first attestation is unsettled. Simplified Chinese uses 镴; 金 marks metal and 巤 supplies sound. Fonts may vary without changing its meaning.
Technical register; alone, it reads as a word, not a reaction.
Do not read it as 蠟: that is wax.

1Why does 鑞 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
