CJK character 閤

閤 is a classical Chinese character for a small side door beside a main gate; it can also mean an inner chamber or palace space. Its meaning usually comes from a compound: 閤門 can mean a palace gate or court office, while 閤眼 means to close the eyes. Alone, it reads as a historical or specialist term.

What 閤 means

It means a side door, then an inner room or palace space.

閤 combines 門, which points to a gate, with 合 as its sound-bearing part. A definition in Shuowen Jiezi, a Chinese dictionary compiled around 100 CE, describes it as a door beside another door. That gives the core image: a smaller entrance beside the main one.

From that side door, the meanings extend to an inner chamber, a woman's room, or a palace. The character appears more clearly in compounds such as 閤門 and 閤眼; some chamber senses overlap with 閣. Read the surrounding language and compound before choosing a translation.

Why does 閤 appear in court terms?

It makes a doorway a boundary for access.

In Song-era China, court offices called East and West Upper 閤門 arranged audiences and ceremony. In the Korean Goryeo and Joseon dynasties, palace histories use 閤門 for a threshold between public and private space, and between ruler and officials. The gate marks who may pass or appear.

That institutional sense grows from a guarded doorway: the word can name a gate and the office that manages ceremonial access. When 閤門 appears in a historical passage, translate the whole compound.

What does 閤 mean when someone sends it?

The language and surrounding compound decide the reading.

In Mandarin, gé, with a rising tone, means a side door, chamber, or palace; hé, also rising, appears in older senses such as close or all. Japanese reads it kō, with a long o, in palace, bedroom, and honorific compounds. Korean palace histories use 閤門 in the term 합문.

On its own, 閤 is too context-dependent to identify one intended sense. In Chinese, Japanese, or Korean historical writing, use the language and neighboring words to decode it.

Classical and compound-dependent; alone, 閤 reads like a historical or specialist term.

A lone 閤 gives too little context to read as a particular reaction.
