霎 (shà, Mandarin pinyin for its sound) means light rain, and in 霎时 it means an instant. Use it inside words like 霎时 and 霎霎, never alone as a reaction. Japanese also reads it for drizzle and a moment.

Text symbol

What 霎 means

It means light rain, a brief moment, or a rain sound.

The 2024 Taiwanese Ministry of Education entry says the original 說文, an early Chinese character dictionary, omits 霎; the added section 說文新附 reads 雨, rain, as the meaning part and 妾 as the sound part.

As of 2026-09-07, checked sources do not establish an oracle-bone or bronze ancestor. 一霎雨 marks brief rain; 霎时 means “in an instant”; 霎霎 imitates wind and rain. Japanese sources list 霎雨 and 霎時 with different readings.

Use 霎 inside a word; alone, it reads like a quoted character, not a reaction.

Alone, 霎 does not signal an emotion.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 霎 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
