What 青 means
Chinese 青 spans green to blue; Japanese reads it ao.
Mandarin spells its reading qīng in Pinyin, a Latin-letter spelling system. Read the whole phrase before choosing a shade: 青草 means green grass, 青天 means blue sky, and literary 青丝 can mean black hair. In Chinese, 青年 uses 青 for youth. The ordinary Chinese words for green and blue are 绿 and 蓝, so the label “blue kanji” is too narrow.
Where did 青 come from?
Its early written forms and color use are dated differently.
Accounts differ on its earliest writing: one reports a late Shang form, not used as a color word; another places a recognizable form in Western Zhou bronze inscriptions, sometimes as a name. Color use is clearer in Spring and Autumn bronze inscriptions.
The Han-era dictionary Shuowen explained the graph through the East and wood, interpreting parts as 生 (“grow”) and 丹 (cinnabar, a red mineral pigment). This records an old explanation of the character, not proof of its original design.
The pre-Qin expression 青出于蓝 compares indigo dye with the plant it comes from. The idiom means that a student or successor surpasses their teacher.
What does 青 mean when someone sends it alone?
By itself, 青 does not pin down one shade or reading.
First check whether the message is Chinese or Japanese, then read the phrase as a whole. In Chinese, 青 can point to different colors or to youth; Japanese ao remains in fixed expressions for some green things. If you need an exact shade, ask which color they mean instead of guessing from 青.
青 belongs to words and set expressions; the language and phrase do the sorting.
Do not turn an isolated 青 into an exact blue or green.

2Why does Japanese use 青 for green?
Japanese retains 青 in some fixed expressions for green things. A study published in 2017 reports ao for green traffic lights, leaves, and vegetables, even though modern Japanese also distinguishes blue and green.
Why does 青 look different in Japanese text?
Regional Japanese and Chinese fonts can draw the same Han character differently under Unicode Han Unification. A different-looking 青 is a regional font form of the same character.
