What 非 means
It marks negation or wrongness. Chinese 非法 means “illegal”; Japanese 非公式 means “unofficial.” In classical Chinese, 非 can also mean “oppose” or “censure”; 是非 contrasts right and wrong.
Where did 非 come from?
It already negated in Shang records. Late-Shang oracle-bone inscriptions (about 1300–1050 BCE) are divination records carved on bone or shell. A paleographic proposal derives 非 from 北, whose older back-to-back form is linked to 背 (“back”). Shuowen Jiezi, a Chinese character dictionary compiled around 100 CE, read it as separated wings invoking 飛; this is an interpretation, not proof of origin.
In Japanese compounds, 非 is a formal category label.
Alone, 非 is not a natural default for “no.”
