What 韾 means
It describes a harmonious, tranquil quality of sound. The traditional Chinese gloss 声和靖也 describes sound that is peaceful and in accord. In Mandarin, the reading is yīn in pinyin, the Latin-letter system used to write Mandarin pronunciation. Jiyun (集韵), a Chinese dictionary organized by pronunciation, records another reading with the same gloss.
The dictionary entries vary in pronunciation, not meaning: 韾 describes sound’s quality, not a person’s mood.
Where did 韾 come from?
Its written history is preserved in Chinese dictionaries. According to a Taiwan Ministry of Education dictionary record checked on 2026-09-12, Shuowen (說文), an early Chinese character dictionary, does not list 韾; the later Guangyun (廣韻) rhyme-dictionary tradition records it. A rhyme dictionary groups entries by pronunciation.
韾 is written with 殸 above 音. Historical phonetic-series records—a traditional way of grouping characters connected through sound—also link it with 音 and 愔. These are structural and sound-history relationships, not interchangeable words.
Classical and lexicographic; use it deliberately when you mean a harmonious quality of sound.
For fragrance or a good reputation, use 馨; 韾 is about sound.
