What 響 means
Sound and resonance are its core meanings; context can extend them to effect. In Japanese, 響き is a noun for sound or resonance, while 響く means to resound and can also mean to affect someone. In Mandarin Chinese, it is read xiǎng, roughly “shyang” with a low-rising tone, and can mean sound or echo.
The early Chinese dictionary Shuowen Jiezi, compiled around 100 CE, defines 響 as sound. It analyzes 音 as the meaning component and 鄉 as the pronunciation component. This is an early recorded analysis, not a creation date.
When does 響 mean influence?
In compounds, sound can stand for an effect. Chinese 影響 in traditional writing and 影响 in simplified writing mean influence or impact. Japanese 影響 has the same meaning and is read えいきょう. Japanese 反響 can mean echo, response, or public reaction, while 音響 refers to sound or acoustics.
The glyph alone does not determine the language or pronunciation. Japanese also uses the reading きょう in compounds, so the reading ひびく does not fit every word containing 響.
Is 響 the same as 响?
Yes: 响 is the simplified Chinese counterpart of traditional 響. Their different shapes reflect different Chinese writing forms. Use the form that matches the surrounding Chinese text; 响 does not belong in a Japanese word just because it has fewer strokes.

1Why does 響 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
