What 頿 means
It means a moustache, especially upper-lip hair.
Its ancestor appears in oracle-bone inscriptions (writing on animal bones and turtle shells) and on bronze, including the Dàyuding, a vessel from the early Western Zhou. The image showed a face with a moustache; the early Chinese character dictionary Shuōwén records that meaning. Later, 此 served as a pronunciation clue, and 須 was replaced by the hair component 髟 in the related form 髭. In later literary usage, 髭 could mean facial hair more broadly.
Historical and literary; 髭 is the clearer form for ordinary writing.
