Chinese character 顜

19037/20992

顜 is a Chinese character read approximately like “jyahng,” with the Mandarin third tone falling and then rising; its pinyin spelling is jiǎng. In classical writing, it describes even, clear rules or people acting in harmony. In the Shiji, 顜若畫一 applies it to Xiao He’s consistent legal code; a later example uses it for people. Enter jiang3 on Mandarin pinyin input and select 顜, or use Cangjie code TBMBC.

What 顜 means

It describes order, accord, and clarity. In the Shiji (Records of the Grand Historian), a history of early Han China, an account of Xiao He and Cao Can uses 顜若畫一 for Xiao He’s code: even and clear. A commentary glosses 顜 as straight and clear.

Later lexicons also record a sense of harmony. In an example from the Qing dynasty, 文武顜心 describes civil and military officials acting together. The examples keep the meanings close: rules or people aligned without discord.

Why do dictionaries connect 顜 to 講, 覯, and 較?

They are different kinds of textual connection, not free substitutes.

The Kangxi Dictionary, a Chinese reference work, records 顜 as 通作講, meaning 顜 was used for 講, and notes another reading linked with 較. A comparison of Shiji versions treats 顜 as a mistaken writing for 覯 in one version of the line. These are separate notes: a dictionary variant, a reading note, and a correction in one version. When quoting, follow the form in your source.

How do I type 顜?

Enter jiang3 with Mandarin pinyin input, then choose 顜.

If it is absent from the candidates, Cangjie, a shape-based Chinese input method, uses code TBMBC for 顜.

Literary and dictionary-like; in modern chat, it reads as a deliberate classical reference.
