What 骻 means
骻 names the hip bone, the groin area, or the thigh bone.
The component 骨 means “bone,” matching the character’s anatomical senses. The Chinese dictionary 玉篇, first compiled in 543, glosses 骻 as 腰骻 (“waist and hip bones”). A later dictionary, 集韻, also records the between-thigh sense, written 胯, and a sense for thigh bone.
The Northern Song history book New Tang History uses 缺骻之服 in its account of Tang clothing associated with military service. A Chinese biography from the Liang dynasty uses 兩骻駢骨 for paired bones at the hips.
How do I type 骻?
Use Mandarin Pinyin input or direct Unicode entry.
In a Mandarin Pinyin IME, type kua and select 骻 from the candidates. If it is missing, try a component- or stroke-based IME; direct Unicode entry also bypasses the candidate list.
Windows Word accepts 9ABB followed by AltX. GNOME / GTK accepts CtrlShiftu, then 9abb, then Enter.
