What 鲏 means
A rare fish-name character, used today chiefly in 鳑鲏. The traditional form 鮍 appears in Shuowen Jiezi, a Chinese character dictionary completed around 100 CE. Its entry gives a fish-name sense and analyzes 魚 as the meaning component and 皮 as the sound component. This is an early recorded entry, not the character's creation date.
Qimin Yaoshu, a later Chinese agricultural manual, records a “split fish” sense in a food-preparation instruction. Today, 鳑鲏 (traditionally 鰟鮍) names a bitterling. 鲏 is specific fish vocabulary, not a general word for “fish.”
How do I type 鲏?
Enter the Mandarin reading and choose 鲏 from the candidates.
On its own, the character is read pī in Mandarin. Pinyin, the Latin-letter spelling used by many Chinese input methods, writes it pī; the sound is roughly “pee” with a puff of air after the p and a steady high pitch. Its Zhuyin spelling is ㄆㄧ. Enter pi or pī and select 鲏. If it is missing, enter pángpí to find 鳑鲏 and choose its second character; there the reading is pí.
Specific fish vocabulary, most familiar today in the name 鳑鲏.
Alone, 鲏 does not mean “fish” in general; it names a specific fish term.

1Why does 鲏 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
