What 鷎 means
A regional Chinese name for a dove.
A 2024 entry in Taiwan's Ministry of Education Dictionary of Chinese Character Variants marks 鷎 as absent from 說文, an early Chinese dictionary. It traces the character through later reference works: 玉篇, 廣韻, 集韻 and 類篇.
The old Chinese dialect glossary 方言, cited by Dai Zhen, records 鷎 as a local dove-name east of the pass, including Zhou and Zheng districts and the Han and Wei capitals. Another gloss links 鷱鴡 with 䳕鳩, a small dove, in Youzhou, a historical northern region. On Windows, Microsoft Traditional Chinese IME accepts Backquote U, then 9DCE and Space as of 2026.
What does it mean if someone sends 鷎?
By itself, it does not tell you why it was sent.
Its documented sense is a regional bird-name. In a Chinese quotation, read the surrounding words; if it arrives alone, ask whether the sender means the character, a historical passage, or its dove sense.
Why can 鷎 look different?
Its appearance depends on the CJK font.
Fonts for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean can draw the same character with different stroke proportions. If a font lacks 鷎, an app may show a blank square.
Specialist and historical; gloss the bird-name in general conversation.
Sent alone, it is not a clear message; ask what context it belongs to.

1Why does 鷎 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
