What 麣 means
It means “goat” in Chinese.
The Taiwan Ministry of Education’s character-variants dictionary cites a Ming-era printed Sisheng Pianhai, a Chinese character dictionary; it says the earlier Shuowen omits 麣. This dates a surviving record, not the character’s creation.

Questions people ask
2How is 麣 read in Cantonese and Japanese?
Cantonese is low-falling ngàahm: start with the nasal at the end of “sing,” then a long “ah”; Jyutping, a Cantonese spelling system, writes ngaam4. Japanese reads it ガン (gan, g as in “go”).
Why can 麣 look different on devices?
Fonts draw the same character differently. As of 2026, computers, phones and browsers may show 麣 differently; a new outline alone does not change the text.
