The EU flag emoji 🇪🇺: twelve gold stars on blue

The EU flag emoji shows a circle of twelve golden five-pointed stars on a deep blue field. The number has nothing to do with how many countries belong: it stayed twelve while the Union grew from six members to 28 and back to 27. The EU explains it as a symbol of completeness, perfection and unity, and the circle as solidarity and harmony between the peoples of Europe. The flag was first adopted in 1955 by the Council of Europe, a separate organisation based in Strasbourg, and taken over by the European Communities in 1985; both still fly it.

The flag emoji is a sequence of two regional indicator letters, (U1F1EA and U1F1FA), for the code EU. That code is not a country: ISO 3166 keeps it "exceptionally reserved" for the European Union, which is why the EU, like the United Nations , has a flag emoji among the countries. iPhone, Android and Mac draw the pair as the flag; Windows has no flag pictures in its emoji font and shows the letters EU. Paste it anyway, in a message or a LinkedIn headline: whoever reads it on a phone sees .

For the colours without the flag, people use , or , and or for the stars. Blue and yellow are also the colours of Ukraine , so on its own can read either way; next to it is clearly Europe.

European Union symbols and what they mean

The EU has five official European Union symbols: the flag , the anthem, the motto, Europe Day and the euro . The anthem is the Ode to Joy from the last movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, in an instrumental arrangement by Herbert von Karajan; it has no official words, because no single language could speak for all members. People write it as or . The motto, United in diversity, has been used since 2000; and fit it, the second also for the Union's 24 official languages.

Europe Day is 9 May, the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration of 1950, in which French foreign minister Robert Schuman proposed pooling French and German coal and steel so that a war between them would become "materially impossible". That plan became the European Coal and Steel Community and, through the Treaty of Rome of 1957 , the European Economic Community. Around Europe Day the institutions open their doors and people post . The dove recalls the Nobel Peace Prize, which the EU received in 2012 for six decades of peace and reconciliation in Europe, and is the globe that shows Europe.

For the institutions there are no dedicated emoji either, so people borrow: for the European Parliament, whose 720 members were elected in June 2024 , sitting in Strasbourg and in Brussels; for the Court of Justice in Luxembourg; for the European Central Bank in Frankfurt; for treaties and new laws.

The euro sign and how to type it

The euro sign was presented by the European Commission in 1996. It is drawn from the Greek letter epsilon, a nod to the cradle of European civilisation and the first letter of the word Europe, crossed by two parallel lines for stability. The euro began as an accounting currency on 1 January 1999, and its coins and notes arrived on 1 January 2002. Every euro coin has a common side and a national side chosen by the country that issues it, and all euro coins are legal tender throughout the euro area.

To type : on Windows with a European keyboard press AltGrE (or CtrlAltE), on a UK keyboard AltGr4, or hold Alt and type 0128 on the number pad. On a Mac with the US layout press OptionShift2. On iPhone and Android, open the number keyboard and long-press the $ key. In HTML write €. The EU's own style guide puts the sign before the amount in English, Irish, Latvian and Maltese and after it in the other official languages (25 ).

Since Bulgaria switched on 1 January 2026, 21 of the 27 member states use the euro. Czechia, Denmark, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Sweden keep their own currencies; Denmark has a legal opt-out. Outside the EU, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and the Vatican use the euro by agreement, and Montenegro and Kosovo use it on their own.

The notes have a hidden design rule: the windows and gateways on the front and the bridges on the back are not real buildings but stylised examples of Europe's architectural periods, so that no country is favoured. The word euro is printed in the Latin and Greek alphabets, EURO and ΕΥΡΩ, and since the second series also in Cyrillic, ЕВРО, for Bulgaria.

EU member state flags and the Union's history in emoji

The grid lists the flags of the 27 EU countries in the order they joined. The six founders of 1957 were Belgium , France , Germany , Italy , Luxembourg and the Netherlands . Denmark and Ireland followed in 1973, Greece in 1981, Portugal and Spain in 1986, and Austria , Finland and Sweden in 1995. The largest enlargement came in 2004 with ten countries at once: Cyprus , Czechia , Estonia , Hungary , Latvia , Lithuania , Malta , Poland , Slovakia and Slovenia . Bulgaria and Romania joined in 2007 and Croatia , the newest member, in 2013.

The United Kingdom joined in 1973 with Denmark and Ireland, voted to leave in 2016 and left on 31 January 2020, the only EU member state ever to do so; is still the shortest way to write Brexit. Countries on the way in, among them Ukraine , Moldova and the states of the Western Balkans, are candidates or potential candidates, not members, so their flags are not in the grid.

Together the member states are home to about 450 million people (an estimate), from Germany with roughly 84 million to Malta with about 0.6 million. Each has its own collection with its food, landmarks and letters: see Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Poland and the rest.

Everyday EU emoji: open borders, roaming, Erasmus and cookie banners

Much of what people say about the EU in emoji is about everyday life. are the passport and customs checks that disappeared: inside the Schengen area, which covers most EU countries plus Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, there are normally no border controls, and inside the customs union goods cross without duties. An EU citizen can travel to any member state with a national ID card and has the right to live and work there under EU free-movement rules. Ireland and Cyprus are in the EU but not in Schengen.

is Erasmus, the exchange programme that since 1987 has sent millions of students to study in another country; is DiscoverEU, which since 2018 has given young people free rail passes for a trip around Europe. is "roam like at home": since 15 June 2017 calls and data in another EU country cost the same as at home. is the common charger law, which has required USB-C on new phones and most small electronics sold in the EU since the end of 2024.

is a cookie banner many websites use to seek consent for cookies that need it under EU privacy rules; the GDPR has applied since 2018 . is Galileo, the EU's own satellite navigation system. stands for the Common Agricultural Policy, the oldest common policy, and for the European Green Deal. And on packaged food you may find the little (U212E, the estimated sign) next to the weight: it tells inspectors that the pack meets the EU's rules for average filling.

Old currency signs and the EU's 24 languages

Before the euro, Europe already had a shared unit: the ECU, the European Currency Unit of 1979, a basket of member currencies used by governments and banks. Its sign is in Unicode, though people mostly wrote ECU, and on 1 January 1999 the euro replaced it one to one. The grid also keeps the signs of national currencies the euro replaced: the Greek drachma, the Spanish peseta, the Italian lira, the French franc sign that the French finance ministry proposed in 1988 and that was hardly ever used, and the German Pfennig, the hundredth of the Deutsche Mark.

The EU works in 24 official languages, written in three alphabets: Latin, Greek for Greece and Cyprus, and Cyrillic for Bulgaria. Every EU citizen may write to the institutions in any of them and get an answer in the same language. The accented letters of those languages, from German ß and Polish ł to Czech ř and Romanian ș, are collected on their own pages: see German, French, Polish, Greek, Bulgarian and the other language collections.

Goed om te weten

  • The twelve stars on have never stood for member states: the Council of Europe chose twelve in 1955 as a number of completeness, and it has stayed twelve through every enlargement.
  • The bridges on euro banknotes were invented so that no country would be favoured, but the Dutch town of Spijkenisse later built real copies of all seven, in the notes' colours, between 2011 and 2013.
  • The European anthem has no words: the Ode to Joy is played as instrumental music, so that no single language speaks for the Union.
  • The little on a packet of coffee or pasta is an EU mark: it says the pack meets the EU's average-filling rules, which lets it be sold in any member state without being checked again.
  • The UK was not the first to vote its way out: Greenland, part of the Kingdom of Denmark, chose to leave the European Communities in a 1982 referendum and left in 1985, 35 years before Brexit.
