Luvale language letters: plain Latin letters, no accents
Luvale is written with the Latin alphabet and no accented letters at all. Words such as Kalunga, likumbi, makishi or Mize need nothing that is not on a standard keyboard, which is why Luvale song lyrics, names and Bible verses paste into any app without trouble. The grid on this page lists the letters of everyday Luvale writing in capital and small form: a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p s t u v w y z. Q, R and X are not part of the Zambian Luvale alphabet, so they are left out.
Several sounds are spelled with two letters, the way Zambian school spelling does it for all its languages: ch as in church (C is used only in this pair), ny as the ny of canyon, and nasal pairs such as mb, nd and ng, as in Ndungu, the title of the Luvale senior chief. V is a busy letter: va- is the plural prefix for people, so vatu means people and vaLuvale the Luvale people. The vowels a e i o u are said roughly as in Spanish or Italian. Like most Bantu languages Luvale uses pitch to tell words apart, but standard spelling does not mark tone.
Prefixes before capitals: vaLuvale, and Luvale punctuation
Luvale, like its neighbours, builds words with noun-class prefixes. When a prefix meets a proper name, Luvale writers often keep the name's capital letter and write the prefix in small letters in front of it, as in vaLuvale. A capital in the middle of a word is therefore normal Luvale spelling, not a typo, and it is worth keeping when you copy a name.
Punctuation follows Zambian English: full stops, commas, question and exclamation marks, and double curly quotation marks “ ” with single ones ‘ ’ inside. A computer keyboard types straight quotes and the straight apostrophe ', and phones usually turn them into curly ones; readers treat both the same. On Windows the curly double quotes are Alt0147 and Alt0148 on the number pad, on a Mac Option[ and OptionShift[.

The Zambia and Angola collections hold the flags, the country emoji and how the kwacha and kwanza are written.
