Combining Cyrillic Titlo

Enter the Church Slavonic titlo after the Cyrillic letter it belongs over; as a combining mark, it sits above that letter. In Church Slavonic writing it marks omitted letters or numeral use. Its shape can vary by font, and poor positioning may leave it floating.

What ҃ means

Enter it after the Cyrillic letter it belongs over.

On GNOME, press Ctrl+Shift+U, type 0483, then Space or Enter; GNOME documents this route as of 2026. For an occasional insertion, a Unicode character picker is enough; a dedicated Church Slavonic keyboard layout is more practical for repeated writing.

The mark attaches to a base letter and sits above it. To span several letters, Church Slavonic typography uses a multi-part titlo sequence; a single mark may float or land on only one letter in fonts that cannot position it across the whole span.

What did the titlo do in manuscripts?

It shortened recurring sacred words and marked numbers. Scribes omitted letters under it, letting readers restore a familiar word from context.

Shorter forms saved space on parchment. In Church Slavonic, that Christian scribal shortcut became part of religious spelling; some conventions also used a titlo to distinguish a sacred name or reference from a general one.

Cyrillic came after Glagolitic, an earlier alphabet for writing Slavic, though their origins remain debated. Surviving Cyrillic manuscripts date to the 10th century, including a formal ustav manuscript dated AD 933. The Cyrillic numeral system developed in Bulgaria in the 10th century, adapting Greek Ionian numerals. Shortening sacred names with a titlo also follows a wider Christian manuscript practice.

Does placement decide numeral or abbreviation?

The letters beneath it decide: expand a word or read a number.

Above an abbreviated word, it signals omitted letters to restore; above numeral letters, it marks their number value. Cyrillic letters used for a date or count therefore read as a number.

Shape is not the clue: a font may draw the same titlo as a wave, zigzag, or straight stroke. For several letters, the mark must align across the span; weak font positioning can leave it floating or broken.

A specialist Church Slavonic mark in liturgical books, manuscript study, cataloging, and type design; out of place in ordinary Cyrillic prose.

It does not change pronunciation; check whether the letters form an abbreviation or a number.

Questions people ask

1

Why does the titlo look different in fonts?

Fonts choose its shape and place combining marks differently: a titlo may appear wavy, zigzagged, or straight, and weak mark positioning can leave it floating or broken.
