What ̊ means
Type the base letter first, then this ring diacritic.
In a text editor that supports Unicode (the standard computers use to encode text), enter the base letter—the one being changed—then insert the overring. A decomposed å stores the letter and ring as a sequence, even when a font draws them as one ringed letter.
The Scandinavian letter Å/å grew from older aa spelling, compressing those two letters into one form. A Swedish language authority explains the ring as a small o over a; a Norwegian typography account gives a competing explanation based on an a. A Scandinavian printed example is dated 1526. Czech ů has a separate history: it marks long u and preserves an older o/uo spelling connection.
Why is my ring floating or turning into Å?
The base controls placement; A plus ring may become Å.
This mark is positioned relative to the preceding base, so fonts may show it awkwardly when the base is missing. Unicode's fallback for displaying an isolated mark places it over a no-break space. NFC normalization, a rule for combining equivalent text sequences, can represent A followed by this mark as Å.
This mark belongs in spelling and typesetting; by itself, it has no letter to change.
Treat a lone mark as unfinished text; ask which letter it belongs to.

Questions people ask
1Why does ̊ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
